It is especially associated with Japanese weddings, where it has traditionally been worn by the mothers and close married female relatives of the bride and groom.

Characterized by its deep black ground, family crests (kamon), and elaborate decorative motifs concentrated toward the lower part of the garment, Kurotomesode represents dignity, celebration and refined Japanese craftsmanship.
